Each year we hold a meeting with our Annual General Meeting (AGM)
and every four years the meeting is held as a conference. Doctors
and scientists are invited to present either a topic of interest or
an update on research. These meetings are an opportunity for our members
to hear the latest news on Myositis, ask questions to medical experts
and meet each other. We also invite a member to present the Iris
Hazel Memorial Talk. These meetings are organised for
Myositis Support Group members and to attend registration is required.

Iris
Hazel Memorial Talk
The Memorial Talk was introduced to our annual meeting in 2002 in
memory of Iris Hazel who left a generous legacy to the Myositis
Support Group. Iris joined the Support Group in 1987 and kept in
touch by letter for many years. She sadly passed away in 2000 at
the age of 81 years. Iris had many health problems but maintained
a sense of humour with one of her quotes being, “I would never
pass the steroids test of the Olympics!” She was very pleased
when the Support Group became a Registered Charity and wrote to
congratulate us saying, “I wish you every success in the future
to your aim,” adding, “I find your letters very supportive
else life would seem a very lonely place.” Iris must have
held the work of the charity and the welfare of fellow sufferers
close to her heart as the residue of her estate £31,923 was
left to the Support Group.
The purpose of the Iris Hazel Memorial Talk is
to be light hearted, inspiring and show the human-side of Myositis
during a day when the presentations are mainly medically based.
The inaugural Iris Hazel Memorial Talk was given by Les
Oakley in 2002, and subsequently by Juile Mallen (2003),
Janelle Jones (2004),
Tony Hindle (2006), Anne
Ali (2007) and John
Cobb (2008).
