Dr Christine Saunders
Dr Christine Saunders was a young, enthusiastic, dedicated and compassionate
doctor working at the Hammersmith Hospital with the muscle team headed
by Professor Victor Dubowitz during the mid 1980’s. It was with
Christine’s support that Les and Irene Oakley (who’s daughter
Paula had been diagnosed with JDM in 1983 and was under the care of
the Hammersmith Team) decided to start a contact group for families
with Juvenile Dermatomyositis. The Support Group was formed in 1985
and held its first medical meeting, organised by Christine, at the
Hammersmith Hospital on the 10th February 1987.
As well as looking after the care and treatment
of children with Juvenile Dermatomyositis, Christine took great
interest in studying the science of Juvenile Dermatomyositis and
worked with immunologist Dr Geraldine Cambridge. Christine wrote
in Newsletter 3 (1986), "Thanks for your encouragement and support
in our research. Already it has been rewarding in terms of patient
care and a better understanding of the basics of the disease. We
hope this will continue."
Sadly in 1988 a few months before the Support
Group became a Registered Charity, Christine passed away from cancer.
Les Oakley wrote at the time, “Her enthusiasm, medical knowledge
and patient care will be greatly missed.”
In memory of Christine and with kind permission from her parents the Support Group decided that the money they raised would be used to sponsor a research grant in her name in recognition of the remarkable woman that she was and the sense of purpose she had given to Support Group.
